Christianne Wickler will step down from her position as chairman of the board of Cargolux Airlines in April.

Wickler will leave the role after two years at the airline's annual general meeting on April 26.

Cargolux said that her decision to vacate the position would allow her to devote more of her time to her business activities, considering the current challenging economic environment.

Wickler also runs the Pall Center group of supermarkets and grocery stores.

"The company wishes to express its sincere thanks and appreciation to Mrs Wickler for her dedication and commitment as chairman of the board of directors and to the airline," Cargolux said.

Shareholders have unanimously decided to propose the appointment of Tom Weisgerber as the new chairman, with a decision set to be made on April 26.

Wickler's appointment as chairman of the state-backed airline was not without its controversy. At the time of the appointment, she was one of the founders of non-profit website Expressis-Verbis that had published controversial articles on the Covid pandemic.

Given the state's involvement in the airline, there was criticism of her appointment because of the controversy around the website.

However, she quickly resigned from her position at the website.
