Air New Zealand (ANZ)is installing over 5,500 Bluetooth tags on its cargo containers, pallets and ULDs – plus more than 100 readers at 29 airports.
The new technology will make tracking and analysing the movement of the carrier’s cargo shipments and equipment easier, as tagged items will automatically update an online application in real time when detected by a reader.
According to ANZ general manager of cargo Rick Nelson: “These Bluetooth tags and readers will not only allow us to speed up cargo handling but also improve our accuracy and inventory management and help to locate any missing items.”
The system was developed in partnership with Core Transport Technologies, whose managing director Ian Craig believes this is the first time this type of technology has been used on such a large scale.
It is currently being used internally only – but Nelson believes it “could be rolled out at airports to monitor ground service equipment, or used to manage mail shipments and eventually we would like to see it become customer facing so our cargo customers can more easily track their shipments”.
