US air cargo operations brace for hurricane Milton

US airlines have added a series of embargo's to their Florida cargo operations as they prepare for the arrival of hurricane Milton.

The category five hurricane is expected to hit Florida later today bringing widespread devastation. Windspeeds of 165 miles per hour have been recorded.

In preparation, the three main US airlines have added a series of embargos to their cargo operations.

American Airlines Cargo has added embargoes for all cargo from, to or through Orlando International (MCO), Southwest Florida International (RSW), Sarasota–Bradenton International (SRQ), Jacksonville International (JAX) and Tampa International (TPA).

The embargoes at MCO, SRQ, JAX and TPA are all in place until early on October 11, while the RSW embargo will last until early on October 10.

United Cargo is placing restrictions at its freight facilities at TPA and MCO through to at least October 10.

"We will enforce complete restrictions on all inbound and outbound shipments across all commodities and United Cargo products during these restrictions," the airline said.

"Any cargo currently in transit and destined for TPA and MCO during the closure period will be retained at the previous station, unless a reroute has been requested by the customer. We anticipate resuming services at both locations on October 10, 2024, and will only reopen the facilities when it is deemed safe."

Delta Cargo has placed an inbound/transfer/outbound embargo for all products at MCO, TPA, SRQ and RSW until October 11.

MCO said it would stop all operations from 8am on October 9, while at RSW there are no flights on October 9 or 10. SRQ and TPA halted operations on October 8.
