TURKISH Airlines total cargo carried increased 22.5 per cent from January to September 2011 compared to the same period of 2010.
“The figures thus indicate more moderate growth and we expect to end this year with an approximate 24 per cent increase in air cargo volume carried,” Soner Akkurt (pictured), Turkish Cargo senior vice-president, told Air Cargo News.
Total shipments for the nine-month period are 89 per cent international traffic and 11 per cent domestic traffic. Turkish Airlines added 20 new destinations and 24 new aircraft joined to the fleet in the first nine months of the year.
August freight volumes were up 18 per cent and September figures surged 27 per cent compared to the same period of 2010.
“We are ranked eighth amongst European airlines for cargo and for our five-year projection we have a goal of being in the top five,” Akkurt said. “Also for the Turkish market our current share of 59 per cent is to be increased to 65 per cent in five years.”
