Lufthansa’s outsourced ULD company, Jettainer, is taking over the management and servicing of all the air-freight containers for Thomas Cook Group Airlines. A new ultra-light container, typical of those that will be used in the contract, was symbolically handed over at the Air Cargo Europe exhibition in Munich on 5 May.
Jettainer has worked for Thomas Cook Group subsidiary, Condor, since 2006, but a joint agreement has now been signed to cover Thomas Cook Airlines UK and Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia. Operations with the other airlines will start in the autumn of this year, bringing all 1,800 units in the under a single management.
New AKE and DQF containers, which weigh only 58 and 99 kilograms respectively, have been in operation for Condor since the spring of this year and are gradually replacing older models.
Director of ground operations at Thomas Cook Group Airlines, Christian Schmitt, said: “We’ve found a partner in Jettainer, which can supply us with innovative and modern ULDs and therefore enable our planes to fly with less weight.”
