American Airlines has launched a new connection between its Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) hub and Spain’s Madrid Barajas International Airport.
The route is operated by the carrier’s new Boeing 787-9 ‘Dreamliner’ aircraft that offers a total of 36 LD3 positions or capacity for 12 pallets, depending on requirements.
American Airline's B787-9s are also currently flying services from DFW to São Paulo-Guarulhos and, in January, will begin flying the DFW-Paris Charles de Gaulle route.
Similarly, in February next year, the aircraft will also be introduced to the DFW to Seoul Incheon link and, according to the airline’s cargo division, freight customers benefit tremendously from what the aircraft can offer.
"The introduction of the 787-9 brings another more fuel-efficient aircraft type with even greater cargo capacity into the American Airlines fleet,” remarked David Vance, American's vice president of cargo operations.
“On routes where we operate the aircraft, our cargo customers will see notable capacity improvements,” he continued.
“We are especially pleased that DFW to MAD (Madrid) is one of the first routes to benefit from the use of this aircraft, as there has been long-term demand for increased space.”
The plan is for American to operate four B787-9s by the end of 2017.
With a maximum range of 14,140km (7,365 nautical miles), Boeing classifies the B787-9 as having “More seats. More range. Cargo capability”. Its cargo capacity is revealed by the US manufacturing giant to be 154.4 cubic metres.
