Temperature controlled packaging specialist Sonoco ThermoSafe said its latest designs of temperature controlled containers have boosted clinical trials and pharmaceutical shipments in the Asia Pacific region.
The US-based company said that countries including China, Japan, South Korea and India have long been involved in sourcing pharmaceutical ingredients for manufacturing and drug development but clinical trials are also increasing in the region.
Sonoco ThermoSafe added that its Pegasus model is the first FAA and EASA-approved advanced passive bulk temperature-controlled container.
It can operate for up to 300 hours (13 days) without any human intervention, providing temperature control of 2 °C to 8 °C payloads and offers real-time tracking and temperature-measuring.
Airfreight is particularly important in Asia Pacific because of the significant distances to other major markets, Sonoco ThermoSafe explained.
Director of business development for EMEA and APAC for Sonoco ThermoSafe’s Bulk Rental Group, Federico Lupp, said: “The Pegasus ULD is a unique temperature control container (TCC) that ensures pharmaceutical shipments arrive in-temperature and in-specification.”
Head of cargo products at Qatar Airways Cargo, Miguel Rodriguez, added: “In coordination with our customer Bolloré Logistics, the Pegasus ULD has proven to be effective in keeping the cargo at the required temperatures."
Brice Bellin, head of healthcare and life science Europe at Bolloré Logistics, commented: “Handling temperature critical healthcare shipments takes an orchestration of several supply chain stakeholders. Pegasus said it has around 15 airline customers comprising Air Canada, American Airlines, Cargolux, Cathay, Delta, Emirates, Korean Air, LATAM, Qatar Airways, Saudia, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, Turkish and United and expects to add more soon.
It operates service centres Chicago O’Hare, New York JFK, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, Schiphol, London Heathrow, Dubai, Incheon and Hong Kong, again with more to be opened in 2024.
