Cargo handler Swissport has expanded its cold storage facility at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).
The facility now boasts a new 750 sq m cold storeroom with direct access from the airside. The new cold storeroom can hold up to 110 aircraft pallets and is equipped with a flatbed ball-mat roller to maneuver shipments in the warehouse.
Four of the six cold storerooms are dedicated to perishable cargo with a temperature range of two to eight degrees Celsius, while the remaining two are assigned to pharmaceuticals needing storage at both 15 to 20 degrees Celsius and two to eight degrees Celsius.
The handler said that last year at NBO it handled 55,000 tons of cargo, of which about 44,000 tons were perishables.
Of the perishable cargo, 75% were fresh-cut flowers exported to Europe through Swissport’s Fresh Cut Flowers Corridor supply chain partnership.
Swissport's facilities in Nairobi are IATA CEIV Fresh and IATA CEIV Pharma certified.
Swissport also installed a vacuum cooler for handling temperature-sensitive cargo.
The cooler has the ability to cool down two maindeck pallets from a starting temperature of 24 degrees Celsius to two degrees Celsius in 22 minutes.
"The vacuum cooler will further shorten handling times and mitigate the risk of temperature impact on sensitive cargo," Swissport said.
