Nippon Express is continuing its efforts to promote sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for a Japanese government project by adding Honda as a participant.

The logistics company has been working to advocate for SAF usage since last August when it was selected as a designated cargo agent for the “Project to Promote SAF Use in Air Cargo Transport for Corporate Compliance with Scope 3 Requirements” implemented by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Nippon Express and Honda have signed a basic transaction agreement that enables the automotive manufacturer to participate in the project.

The agreement will see Nippon Express issue Honda a CO2 reduction certificate for its SAF usage as certified by a third-party organisation and engage in other activities to cut Honda’s Scope 3 CO2 emissions.

Nippon Express will continue providing air cargo transport-related support to Honda’s environmental initiatives.

The Nippon Express Group aims to expand its use of SAF and currently provides customers with the opportunity to participate in its SAF programme. The group also participates in the SAF initiative offered by All Nippon Airways (ANA).

Furthermore, the group aims to reduce in-house emissions Group-wide (Scope 1, 2) by 50% from 2013 levels by 2030. In May 2023, the Group submitted a letter of commitment to obtain certification under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Its goal is to help bring about carbon-neutral societies by 2050 (Scope 1, 2, 3).

In 2023, Nippon Express Europe agreed to use SAF for airfreight shipments with Lufthansa Cargo.
