Global trade growth remained sluggish in May and the air cargo load factor continued to “exhibit weakness” according to the latest Asia-Pacific cargo hub statistics from Airports Council International (ACI).
Asia-Pacific members of ACI reported a marginal increase in total airfreight of 1.4% in May 2016 whereas the Middle East reported moderate growth at 3.3%.
The top three airfreight hubs in the Asia-Pacific all delivered a “mild increase/decline from last year” said ACI.
Hong Kong (HKG) saw a fall of 1.1%, China’s Shanghai Pudong (PVG) recorded an increase of 1.5%, while South Korea’s Incheon (ICN) also reported an increase, of 1.4%. Among Asia-Pacific airports, Guangzhou (CAN) generated the highest growth at +9.7%.
ACI said that he picture in the Middle East was “mixed”, while the largest hub Dubai (DXB) in the UAE maintained “solid growth” of 4.9%, and Doha (DOH) in Qatar continued to expand and recorded an “outstanding increase” of 18.3%, most freight airports in the region suffered a decline in air freight volume.
