Recently launched Skyway Airlines of the Philippines has launched freighter operations to Hong Kong with Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) providing handling services.
The new freighter flights launched on 20 March using an 18-tonne capacity Boeing 737-400 freighter and target the e-commerce market.
The service operates three times per week between Hong Kong and Clark International Airport base and three times per week between Hong Kong and Manila.
Hactl will provide terminal handling, ramp handling and documentation services.
The cargo handler pointed out that the Philippines has traditionally seen domestic air cargo carried in the bellyholds of passenger aircraft.
However, a booming e-commerce sector - significantly accelerated as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic - created a pressing need for dedicated cargo capacity.
The country is comprised of more than 7,000 islands, making air cargo an important transport mode.
"Skyway aims to satisfy this need, and has now successfully connected the Philippines to the world’s busiest international airport,” Hactl said.
Jose Angelo Peralta president and chief executive of Skyway Airlines, said: “We are very pleased to have the one-stop service support from Hactl for our freighter operation into Hong Kong International Airport, which greatly reduced our challenges in the service launch. We hope to contribute to the trade development between Hong Kong and the Philippines.”
Hactl executive director - commercial and business development Joanna Li added: “Skyway Airlines is an interesting new venture that fills a very real need for the Philippines. We welcome this latest addition to our carrier family, which further extends our global connections."
The airline currently operates a single 737 freighter, but has plans to add more, according to Cargo Facts.
