Silk Way West Airlines, part of the Baku, Azerbaijan-headquartered freighter operator Silk Way Group, has begun using Descartes’ cloud-based Global Air Messaging Gateway. The system will help the carrier achieve “higher standards of service and minimise costs by expanding and automating air cargo communication processes such as the electronic airway bill (eAWB)”, a Descartes statement pronounced.
More specifically, the Global Air Messaging Gateway helps carriers automate connectivity to trading partners, monitor shipment status in real-time, and communicate timely status updates to both forwarders and consignees. The solution uses Descartes’ cloud-based Global Logistics Network (Descartes GLN) electronic data exchange system.
“In an industry where margins are slim, we need to work together with our trading partners to reduce costs and maximise efficiency by eliminating manual and paper-based processes,” Kamran Gasimov, CEO at Silk Way West Airlines, commented. “We’re taking a significant step toward realising these benefits.”

Silk Way West was established in 2012 and currently operates three Boeing 747-8 and two 747-400 freighters. It flies to more than 50 destinations across the US, Europe, Middle East and Far East, as well as the CIS region.
