Silk Way Airlines has flown two beluga whales from Moldova to Spain as part of efforts to relocate the animals from Ukraine.
The airline said that due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, direct flights to the country were not possible so the whales were first transport by road to Moldova before they were flown to Spain onboard one of its IL-76 freighter aircraft.
The carrier said its team worked closely with animal care experts and veterinarians to monitor the whales' health and comfort during the flight.
To transport whales, specialist tanks are used with the whales secured with slings.
"The transportation involved a series of carefully planned steps, including the use of specialised equipment and containers designed to provide a stable and secure environment for the animals," the carrier explained.
Mustafa Azimov, first deputy director of Silk Way Airlines, said: "I would like to thank the entire rescue team engaged in this mission and especially the crew for their exceptional efforts during takeoff, flight, and landing. They ensured the journey was smooth and stress-free for the animals, and delivered them safely to their new home.
"This operation was very difficult and sensitive, but together we undertook a painstaking job that lasted about three months in total, ensuring it would be a success. We are proud to have been part of this unique mission to rescue these two magnificent whales."
Silk Way Airlines collaborated with Oceanografic and a group of international animal transporters specialising in marine mammals.
The flight is not the first time beluga whales have been transported in an aircraft.
In 2019, Cargolux flew former captive whales, Little Grey and Little White, to Iceland on a 6,000 mile flight from China.
The two belugas were transported in custom-made slings designed to their exact physical requirements and were then placed in tailored containers.
