Severe weather over the last few days has caused disruption to cargo and express operations in the US and Europe.
Yesterday (January 18) Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was forced to close when a powerful storm hit the Netherlands, while airports in the southeast of the US also continue to be affected.
Schiphol Airport re-opened today but the airport was expecting a busier day than normal as airlines played catch-up following yesterday's cancellations.
Meanwhile, in the US, airlines and express operators continued to face disruption. Overnight, FedEx said that it experienced flight and sort disruptions at its Memphis and Indianapolis hubs due to the continuing effects of winter storms, including extremely low temperatures.
“Potential delays are possible for package deliveries across the US. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our team members, as well as providing the highest level of service to our customers. Please continue to check fedex.com for updates,” it said.
UPS said that it would continue to monitor the impact of the severe winter weather that moved through Texas, the mid-Atlantic and southern US.
Also, Delta Cargo yesterday placed an embargo on certain types of shipment at Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, although the restrictions at Atlanta were lifted by the end of the day.
The airline also warned that trucking operations were being affected by the weather and this could result in shipments being delayed.
