Drewry’s East-West Airfreight Price Index of 28 major routes jumped 12 cents to $2.68 per kilo in September.

The airfreight and shipping analyst said: “This seasonal hike to the index was expected and brings it to parity with September 2016.”

September 2016’s index was $2.69, after which it surge to $2.99 in November, only to fall away sharply to $2.48 in February 2017 before staging a gradual recovery to $2.56 in August.

It added that with the market continuing its upwards trend, it expects airfreight rates to increase further in October.
