Shanghai airport’s main cargo terminal operator continued its growth path in the first seven months of 2016, handling 919,461 tonnes of airfreight, a 2% year-on-year increase.

Pudong Int’l Airport Cargo Terminal Co Ltd (PACTL) said that the volume increase was “the strongest result for the first seven months of any year in the company’s history”.

PACTL’s import cargo volumes increased by 2.9% to 382,929 tonnes during the first seven months in comparison with the same period in 2015. International imports rose by 3.6% to 355,920 tonnes, while domestic imports decreased by 4.8% to 27,009 tonnes.

The company’s export cargo volumes at the Chinese mega-hub grew by 1.4% to 536,532 tonnes. International exports showed a growth rate of 1.4% to 504,707 tonnes, while domestic exports increased by 2.0% to 31,825 tonnes.

Lutz Grzegorz, vice president of PACTL, said: “Despite challenging market conditions, we succeeded in beating last year’s record results within the first seven months of 2016.

“First of all, this is due to the fact that international imports and domestic exports are increasing again. Secondly, we managed to grow our business with both existing and new customers by continuously maintaining and improving our excellent service and quality standards and by investing in our infrastructure.”

The addition of Iberia Airlines and Aeroflot Russian Airlines to the PACTL portfolio in June and July saw the handler gain five new customer airlines in the first seven months of 2016.

Processing 49.6% of the air cargo handled at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, PACTL further increased its market share in the first seven months of 2016.

PACTL is a Sino-German joint venture with three shareholders: Shanghai Airport (Group) Co Ltd (51%), Lufthansa Cargo (29%) and JHJ Logistics Management Co Ltd (20%).
