Qatar Airways Cargo has received an award from the Nepal Freight Forwarders Association (NEFFA) for its cargo performance in the country during 2014.
The Middle East passenger and cargo airline received the accolade for lifting the highest tonnage of cargo from the Asian country last year.
In April this year, the carrier's freighter operations coordinated Qatar’s humanitarian response to the massive earthquake that hit Nepal and also helped transport international aid to disaster victims.
The airline's first freighter left Doha for Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport) within 24 hours of the earthquake and was the first commercial airline to touchdown at Tribhuvan.
Sunil Bahadur Thapa, Nepal’s minister for commerce and supplies, presented the 2014 award to Qatar Airways Cargo’s sales executive Nepal, Tap Shrestha.
Ulrich Ogiermann, Qatar Airways chief officer cargo, said: “As the leading cargo airline operating in Nepal, Qatar Airways Cargo has always considered its role as fundamental to facilitating international trade to support the Nepalese economy.
“The efficient and fast movement of goods internationally is important for Nepal, and our continued commitment to delivering a service to the highest of standards will further enable the country to recover, following the devastating earthquakes that recently hit the country.”
In 2014, more than 2,245 tonnes of airfreight were exported from Nepal by Qatar Airways Cargo. Its three daily flights from Kathmandu transport textile goods such as garments, carpets and handicrafts to the Middle East airline’s hub at Hamad International Airport, Doha.
