Ostend-Bruges International Airport in Belgium recorded a cargo throughput increase of 17.8% in 2021.
The handled volume rose by 17.8% to 62,056 tons. This is the best result since 2011, said the airport.
Cargo tonnage was 52,659 in 2020, 24,757 in 2019 and 27,719 in 2018. Volume in 2017 was lower at 23,369, but increased from 22,224 in 2016 (which saw increased volume due to the bombings at Brussels airport) and 16,842 in 2015.
Alongside the airport’s main customer EgyptAir, Qatar Airways carried out flights to Ostend. The airport has been included in the Qatar Airways route network since May.
In addition to the regular carriers, the airport served temporary customers such as SilkWay West Airlines, Etihad Cargo, Mesk Air and Air Belgium.
Humanitarian missions and smaller cargo flights have also contributed to the volume.
“This excellent result is the result of the hard work and dedication of everyone at our airport. We will also continue to invest in the cargo segment in the years to come,” said chief executive Eric Dumas.
The airport has an overall area of approximately 350 ha (including over 292 ha airside). Its runway is 3,200m long and 45m wide.
