Lise-Marie Turpin, vice-president of cargo at Air Canada, answers:

"This is not about going back to the ‘90s. It is not about cutting out the forwarders. Forwarders provide services that airlines cannot provide.

In the passenger business, today, the travel agent adds value and charges for that. He has to do more than what a customer can do on-line himself. Maybe we are headed down that road in the future, or maybe this is wishful thinking – we shall see . . but we need to be part of the conversation to be able to understand better what we can provide.

‘We [the air cargo industry] are definitely in a serious period of transition. We know that air cargo has lost some share to ocean and probably won’t gain that back. We need to think about our business model . ."
