It is with great sadness that Air Cargo News reports the passing of Martin Schröder, founder and former chief executive of Martinair.

Schröder passed away on October 2 at the age of 93. Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) said his influential vision and leadership have left a lasting impact on the aviation industry.

"Martin Schröder was a true pioneer," AFKLMP said. "His legacy began in 1958 with the founding of Martin’s Air Charter, a modest charter airline that quickly grew into the iconic Martinair.

"Under his leadership, the company became a key player in both passenger and cargo transport, a testament to his spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Schröder firmly believed that air travel should be accessible to all, and this belief lay at the heart of his life's work."

The company added that Schröder played a key role in paving the way for the airline's close cooperation with KLM and, eventually for Air France KLM Martinair Cargo.

“Martin Schröder will be remembered as a man who pursued his dreams with passion and perseverance. His name will remain closely linked to aviation in the Netherlands and beyond. His vision, courage and innovative spirit will continue to inspire us all,” said Adriaan den Heijer, executive vice president Air France KLM Cargo and managing director Martinair.

The company added that its thoughts are with his wife Tineke, their children and grandchildren, and the rest of his family.

"We offer them our heartfelt condolences and would like to wish them strength during this difficult time," AFKLMP said.
