India’s busiest cargo airport, Mumbai International, has doubled its export handling capacity with a new terminal for bonded and heavy goods.

The new export facility, the first of its kind in the country, will offer exclusive handling for heavy, odd-sized and bonded consignments, and will add 500,000 tons a year to total capacity.

The 7,500 sq m terminal will provide a one stop solution for bonded cargo, with a dedicated channel for cargo admittence, X-ray screening and palletisation. It will reduce dwell time by half, said GVK Mumbai International Airport, the public private partnership joint venture between a GVK-led consortium and the Airports Authority of India.

Lighter export consignments will continue to be handled at the existing export terminal and the new facility will complement the existing Export Unitization Zone by speeding up cargo admittance and turning around vehicles more quickly.

Other features of the new terminal include a truck dock and dock levellers, heavy weighing scales, a dedicated documents acceptance area and customs examination area, seven X-Ray machines, materials handling equipment including hydraulic pallet trucks and forklifts and 24-hour security with CCTV cameras.
