Supply chain organisation Logistics UK has broadly welcomed the Scottish government's latest aviation statement, although it would like to see more ambitious targets for the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The Aviation Statement sets out actions the Scottish Government will take to help grow Scotland’s international connectivity, secure lifeline services in the Highlands and Islands and play its part in international efforts to decarbonise aviation.

This includes examining how low and zero emission aircraft could improve connectivity for island and rural communities; considering options for increasing the production and use of SAF in Scotland; reviewing existing routes supported by the Scottish Government to understand the value added and to help realise its vision for Scotland to be at least as well connected as comparable nations; and reviewing current governance arrangements for local authority and HIAL-operated airports to consider how to make operations more efficient.

Following the publication of the statement, Logistics UK senior policy manager Alexandra Herdman said: “Transport Scotland’s Aviation Statement is a welcome starting point for wider discussions with the logistics sector about connectivity, trade and decarbonisation.

"Airfreight in Scotland plays a critical role in the economy and Scottish exports, and we look forward to working with the Scottish Government on supporting and maximising economic growth in this area."

However, the organisation would have liked to have seen a more ambitious target than 2030 for agreeing options for increasing SAF production and use in Scotland.

Herdman said Logistics UK is pressing Transport Scotland to strive for greater urgency on the adoption of SAF across the sector.

"Scotland has the potential to be a trailblazer in SAF production which would enable faster decarbonisation of aviation across the whole of the UK, and we look forward to greater detail on how SAF can be produced and utilised in the upcoming Climate Change Plan," Herdman said.

“Logistics UK has a firm commitment to supporting innovation in low carbon fuels and our members are excited to hear more about proposals for a multimodal Hydrogen Hub at Glasgow Airport which, if successful, would allow Glasgow to be the first regional commercial airport to produce and use green hydrogen.”
