Leipzig/Halle Airport has increased its cargo volumes for the fifteenth consecutive year and more than tenfold since 2007.
In 2019, Europe’s fifth-largest and Germany's second-largest air cargo hub handled 1.2m tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth of 1.4%.
Overall, airports in Europe are expected to record a decline in cargo volumes last year.
In December, cargo volume increased by 2.9% to 104,365 tonnes, compared with the same month in 2018.
Growth at the airport has been driven by DHL's hub. The world's largest airfreight forwarder has been operating at Leipzig/Halle since 2008.
The airport is planning expand the infrastructure in the area of the apron used by DHL.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is also the base airport of AeroLogic, a joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo.
Also operating at the airport are more than 50 cargo airlines flying to more than 200 destinations each year.
To accommodate its growth, Leipzig/Halle will invest €500 m in the next few years on new aprons, logistics and office buildings in the northern and southern parts of the airport.
