Iraq’s Najaf International Airport has ordered a Z Portal cargo screening system and a number of parcel inspection systems from Massachusetts, US-headquartered American Science and Engineering (AS&E). The equipment will provide Najaf Airport with capability to scan incoming vehicles and baggage for weapons, vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), drugs, and other threats and contraband. Najaf Airport has also contracted to a five-year contract for ongoing support from AS&E.
“Passengers and freight forwarders are increasingly turning to Najaf Airport for their international air travel and shipping requirements,” commented Sheikh Faed Al-Shimary, director general of the Najaf Airport Authority. “We chose AS&E’s comprehensive detection solutions because they provide rapid inspection of vehicles and carry-on luggage in a high-security and high-traffic environment while ensuring the flow of passengers and commerce.”
According to AS&E, its X-ray detection systems are used for aviation screening in Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa. For example, Taiwan Aviation Police deploys the Z Portal system to check in air cargo passing through Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
The Z Portal system offers multi-view, drive-through screening for left, right, and top-down imaging of cars, vans, trucks and their cargo. The screening system is available in two sizes – one for large trucks, buses and freight-carrying vehicles, and a smaller size for passenger vehicles. Customers include the US Department of Defense (DoD), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Abu Dhabi Customs and NATO.
