IAG Cargo is looking to develop Kuala Lumpur as a fourth Asian hub, alongside Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore, after British Airways restored a direct service from London in May.
Extraordinarily for a member country of the UK Commonwealth with long colonial ties, BA suspended services to Malaysia in 2001, leaving passengers - and cargo - to hub mainly via Singapore in the intervening years.
John Cheetham, regional commercial manager Asia Pacific for IAG Cargo, told a media event that with a daily B777 service in place, offering 15 tonnes of cargo capacity as standard and up to 19 tonnes depending on weather conditions and baggage load, Kuala Lumpur could act as a “hub for the wider area”.
