Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reversed recent declines in air cargo with a 1% year-on-year rise to 368,000 tonnes in September. The rebound was primarily due to a 3% year-on-year growth in exports; imports experienced negligible growth and transshipments decreased by 3% compared to the same month last year. Amongst the key trading regions, traffic to and from North America and Australasia increased most significantly.
In the first nine months of this year, HKIA handled 3.2 million tonnes of cargo, a growth of 0.2% over the same period last year. On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo throughput grew by 1.3% to 4.4 million tonnes.
Commercial executive director, Cissy Chan, said: “HKIA has been the world’s busiest cargo airport for five consecutive years, and we will continue to offer the utmost efficiency and reliability to our customers, as we strive to maintain the airport’s status as a leading international and regional aviation hub.”
Passenger volume rose by 6.3% to 5.4 million, while aircraft movements increased by 3.3% to 33,085 compared to the same month last year.
