Hamad International Airport’s (HIA) cargo volumes increased by 20.71% in 2021, with 2.6m tonnes of cargo handled throughout the year.
The airport in Qatar also introduced six new cargo destinations.
In December, Air Cargo News reported that AECOM will oversee the design and manage construction for Cargo Terminal 2 and Amiri Flight Facilities at HIA, as part of the Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management’s infrastructure expansion programme.
HIA announced its second stage of expansion, including the new cargo terminal, in October.
Aircraft movement at HIA grew by 28.12% in 2021, with 169,909 aircraft taking off and landing.
HIA also witnessed a 41.37% increase in the number of passengers in 2021 compared to 2020, with a total of 17,702,635 passengers served.
The airport's performance is also closely related to that of Qatar Airways Cargo, which has been rapidly expanding in the freight sector over recent years.
HIA’s expansion, currently in Phase A, is set to increase its capacity to more than 58m passengers annually by 2022. Phase B, which will commence after the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, will increase HIA’s capacity to more than 60m passengers.
HIA currently serves a total of 156 destinations, with eight new passenger destinations and one new airline partner, namely RwandaAir, added to HIA’s network in 2021.
