Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) is rolling out 5G across its terminal to allow increased automation of cargo handling.
The company said utilising a 5G network, which is being implemented by telecommunications firm HKT, will allow it to develop an “interconnected ecosystem” that will aid the future adoption of new technology.
For example, Hactl said the 5G private network will enable Hactl’s Autonomous Electric Tractors (AET) to efficiently transport cargo with real-time coordination and dynamically adapt to traffic and safety protocols, reducing the need for human intervention.
The company will also be able to deploy security robots equipped with AI-powered video analytics and 5G private network that will continuously patrol cargo areas and transmit live footage to Hactl’s Security Control Centre over a dedicated, secure 5G mobile channel for real-time surveillance and instant threat detection and response.
Meanwhile, Hactl’s 5G-connected Smart Cargo Locating system will streamline warehouse logistics by utilising real-time positioning and automated cargo tracking. Smart Forklifts for cargo racking will communicate with one another and the central operations system to optimise workflow and minimise manual errors.
Wilson Kwong, Hactl chief executive, said: “Hactl’s success to date is firmly based on its enthusiastic adoption of the very latest technologies throughout its business.
”This new private 5G installation is our latest initiative, building the essential foundation to support our future use of robotics, autonomous vehicles and digitalisation of processes throughout our SuperTerminal 1 facility.”
Other automation investments at the facility include Smart Handheld Terminals, wearable technology and IoT-integrated smart sensors.
The investment in automation technology comes as the handling sector faces a recruitment challenge and volumes in Hong Kong continue to rise.
Last year, Hactl handled around 40% of the 4.9m tonnnes of cargo processed through the airport, which recently added a third runway to boost capacity.
Meanwhile, the handler has added Hungary Airlines and Skyway Airlines as new customers this year.
