LUFTHANSA CARGO’S chief executive Karl Ulrich Garnadt is leaving the freight airline to become a member of the German carrier’s executive board and the new head of its passenger business.

Peter Gerber, previously responsible for human resources, IT and services and a Lufthansa executive board member since June 2012, will assume his cargo role.

Garnadt succeeds Carsten Spohr, who will become chairman of the board and chief executive of Lufthansa Group from May of this year.

Garnadt has worked for the Lufthansa Group since 1979. The 57-year-old has been chief executive and chairman of Lufthansa Cargo since January 2011.

Wolfgang Mayrhuber, chairman of the supervisory board of Lufthansa, comments: “We are delighted to have obtained Karl Ulrich Garnadt for the executive board of the Lufthansa Group. He is a very experienced aviation manager with extensive knowledge of the group and makes an ideal addition to the board team.”

Commenting on his new role, Garnadt says: “I'm delighted that the supervisory board has placed its confidence in me. I will do everything together with the Lufthansa Passenger Airlines team to further strengthen our position as the leading European airline. We know the challenges, but we also know our strengths.”

Gerber, 50, was also previously in charge of finance, IT and human resources on the executive board of Lufthansa Cargo from 2009.
