Air Cargo News sister title DVZ has reported that in May, heavily influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport handled significantly more freight than in the same month of the previous year.
The hub's freight business increased by 81.5% to 22,168 tonnes, according to the latest statistics from the Association of German Airports (ADV). In contrast, there was a downward trend at a number of other major German airports.
From January to May 2020, the Frankfurt-Hahn airfreight business increased by 20.9% year-on-year to 84,878 tonnes.
Frankfurt-Hahn has attributed the upswing in its freight business in May to the increased amounts of protective clothing that was transported during the coronavirus crisis.
Meanwhile, the passenger business at the hub plummeted in May, as was the case at other airports. It declined by 97.1% compared with the same month last year — down to just 3,713 passengers.
From January to May 2020, the passenger business decreased by 67.7% year-on-year to 206,177 passengers.
