Frankfurt airport saw further cargo red ink in January, with a 0.1% fall in cargo volume versus 2015 to 159,650 tonnes, the eleventh monthly decline in a row for Europe's top airfreight hub.
The German gateway, which saw a 2.3% fall in total 2015 volumes to just over 2.1m tonnes, registered its last monthly cargo increase – up by 1.8% – in February 2015.
However, the rate of decline appears to be falling, with a 0.8% decrease in January 2015 compared with 0.1% last month.
Frankfurt is not alone among European hubs in seeing a first month cargo decline. Brussels saw demand drop by 2.4% year on year in January to 36,964 tonnes, as the withdrawal of freighter flights by Ethiopian Airlines began to bite.
From a much smaller base, London-Gatwick saw its January volumes fall by 9.7% year on year in January to 5,231 tonnes.
