FedEx has shown its environmental credentials by saving $1bn in jet fuel since 2007 and surpassed a goal to boost ground vehicle fuel efficiency by 30%, five years ahead of target.

The results have been revealed in the US-based parcel delivery giant’s annual Global Citizenship Report (GCR) – detailing the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental work.

The report includes details of the FedEx ‘Fuel Sense’ programme which, in addition to the fuel cost savings, also avoided more than 4m tonnes of carbon emissions.

All of the Fuel Sense team members who work with aircraft are asked to adopt a fuel-efficient mindset and to "search out innovative ways" to help save fuel.

“FedEx is committed to being a positive force in the communities we serve,” said Mitch Jackson, vice president of environmental affairs and sustainability, FedEx Corp.

“This means advancing programmes that support the environment, improving the safety of our streets and putting our global transportation network to work to provide disaster relief where it’s needed most.”

FedEx has also entered into an agreement with Colorado-based Red Rock Biofuels to purchase alternative jet fuel made from wood waste.

Starting in 2017, FedEx will blend the first 6m gallons of jet fuel at its Oakland hub in California, ultimately producing at least 48m gallons over an eight year term.
