European airports saw monthly freight traffic increase by a two-year high in April, outstripping even passenger demand growth.
The latest figures from Airports Council International (ACI) show that European airports saw freight traffic increase by 5.5% year on year in April while passenger traffic growth slowed to 3.7%.
ACI said the lower passenger growth was down to an early Easter holiday pushing that traffic into March, the lingering impact of the Brussels terror attacks and reduced capacity at that facility and air traffic control strikes in France.
There were also widespread security concerns, with Turkish airports in particular suffering a “sharp” decrease in international traffic.
While the organisation didn’t provide any commentary on the growth in cargo demand, others have suggested the extra weekend, which tends to be the busiest time of the week, and the early Easter both had a positive impact on demand growth.
