THE permanent relocation of Emirates SkyCargo’s freighter operations to Al Maktoum International – Dubai World Central (DWC) resulted in a triple-digit surge in cargo traffic in the second quarter of this year, writes Thelma Etim, deputy editor.

DWC handled 199,751 tonnes, up 308 per cent from the same period in 2013, says a company statement.

Year to date freight volumes also rose to 276,567 tonnes – up 168.7 per cent compared with last year.

Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Cargolux have also switched their scheduled freighter services to Dubai’s second airport – contributing to the recorded growth spurt.
