Google has become the latest company to utilise DHL Express' GoGreen Plus service to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and reduce emissions from airfreight operations.

The initiative includes express shipping of Google devices in the devices & services business unit across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, and is part of Google’s push towards encouraging existing decarbonisation technologies in air cargo transportation.

Google's investment in SAF through the GoGreen Plus service follows a pilot project with DHL Express for four months last year where the technology company trialled utilising SAF in its operations.

John Pearson, chief executive of DHL Express, said: “By deploying SAF across our international network, we are pleased to offer the GoGreen Plus service to our long-standing partner Google. We are confident that this agreement and Google's meaningful investment will encourage others to take the same initiative and drive the transition to low-emission transportation services using sustainable aviation fuel.”

“Google has a goal to achieve net-zero emissions across our operations and value chain by 2030. Optimizing how we transport Google devices around the world is a key part of this journey,” added Omar Molina, director of global transportation at Google. “That's why we're thrilled to collaborate with partners like DHL, who share our passion for Net-Zero. The SAF program is a big step forward in that direction."

GoGreen Plus was launched by DHL Express last year and uses CO2-insetting and SAF to enable customers to reduce the CO2e emissions associated with their freight. GoGreen Plus is made possible in part by three SAF contracts with bp, Neste and World Energy.

DHL Express has this year also struck GoGreen Plus service deals with multinational bank Standard Chartered, German consumer electronics business Medion and e-commerce platform Mytheresa.
