DHL Express has expanded in Richmond, Virginia by moving into a larger facility located near Richmond International Airport (RIC) that will enable it to handle more air cargo.

The $7m investment in the new service centre includes the addition of equipment that maximises processing capabilities and enables earlier deliveries.

DHL Express's new leased space at 2740 Charles City Road, Richmond is 87% larger than the company’s previous Richmond location, enabling the full-service operation with a customer counter to increase shipment capacity and improve first-stop delivery times for international services by at least 30 minutes in the local market.

“By strategically choosing to relocate near the airport and significantly expanding our facility space in Richmond, we are ensuring our customers receive the highest levels of service while investing in our future growth,” said Richard Saavedra, vice president and general manager for DHL Express in the Southeast US. “This expansion will allow us to better serve the greater Richmond market’s international shipping needs with improved delivery times and greater customer service.”

The new facility handles US domestic as well as time-definite international shipments to and from the 220 countries and territories served by DHL. The location provides a total of 40 pickup and delivery (PUD) vehicle load positions, and its advanced material handling system can process up to 3,900 pieces per hour (PPH).

The facility is planning to introduce electric pickup and delivery vehicles along with EV chargers throughout the warehouse. This is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s sustainability roadmap, which targets 60% of its global delivery fleet to be electrically powered by 2030.
