Cologne Bonn Airport saw a 14% increase in air cargo tonnage throughput in 2021, a new annual record.

In total, around 986,000 tonnes of products and goods were handled at the German airport in 2021 - 14% more than in 2020 and more than ever before, said the airport. December closed with a record of just under 94,000 tonnes.

“Cargo has once again developed disproportionately and ended with a record value,” explained airport managing director Torsten Schrank. “Cologne Bonn Airport's outstanding importance as NRW's most important logistics hub for supplying the population with medical goods, industrial parts, food and commodities for daily use was especially highlighted during the (Covid-19) crisis.”

“Cargo is a stabiliser in the crisis and an important pillar of our business model,” Schrank added.

The airport has predicted that the threshold of 1m tonnes of air cargo in a single year will be passed for the first time in 2022.

In April 2021, Cologne-Bonn airport said it had recorded the highest increase in cargo volumes in a decade.
