Shenzhen, China-based online clothing retailer Globalegrow is investing $150,000 in a drone delivery research project over the next year.
The company plans to recruit roboticists and aeronautical engineers to create a self-flying drone, fitted with sensors to track the package delivery and to retract and detach the tether cable. There would also be additional safety measures to alert passers-by when drone deliveries are taking place.
Globalegrow says that a major motivation is to create faster and economical drone deliveries as the premium that consumers would be willing to pay is low compared to traditional delivery methods. However, the company believes that delivery times could be reduced by 25% compared with existing methods.
