Taiwan’s China Airlines has moved its freighter flights to the new Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC). The carrier uses the UAE as an intermediate stopover on its 747 freighter flights between Taipei and Amsterdam, Luxembourg and Frankfurt.
The Dubai Airports is planning a progressive move of flights to its new gateway, starting with all-cargo operations. So far, over 25 scheduled and charter cargo operators, including home carrier Emirates SkyCargo, have set up services from the new airport to more than 60 destinations; freight grew to 758,371 tonnes in 2014, from 209,209 tonnes in 2013.
Dubai Airports’ senior vice president operations, Majed Al Joker, said that China would “join an increasing number of airlines which are recognising DWC as an important cargo hub with its world class facilities, flexible schedules, proximity to Jebel Ali Port and the fact that is it an ideal transit point between east and west.”
The first flight was welcomed by a traditional water salute by airline and Dubai Airports executives.
