China's air cargo volumes have increased nearly 20% this year compared to last year as a result of increased international demand, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

Between January and October of this year, the country's aviation sector handled nearly 7.3m tonnes of cargo and mail, marking a 19.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019, reported Xinhua, China's state press agency.

International routes carried approximately 2.93m tonnes of cargo and mail, up 48.5% from the same period in 2019.

The surge in air cargo is attributed to China's industrial development, deeper Belt and Road cooperation, and the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce, said CAAC official Shang Kejia.

Looking ahead, Kejia said the CAAC will continue to focus on enhancing the allocation of air traffic rights, refining route and flight management policies and advancing cost reduction and efficiency improvements in air logistics.

Boeing’s 2024 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) for China found China’s freighter fleet is expected to nearly triple by 2043, with demand stimulated by its booming e-commerce sector.

The Outlook stated that 170 freighter deliveries are expected between 2024 and 2043. This number includes both newbuild and conversion models.

While e-commerce is expected to continue to boost Chinese exports, the country is facing challenges with airfreight shipping into the US.

US president-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, has said he will sign an executive order imposing an additional 10% tariff on imports from China.

Stricter regulatory requirements for e-commerce shipments are also expected.
