Dubai International Airport handled 226,175 tonnes of cargo in June, 3.9% more than in the same month of last year.

A total of 1.28 million tonnes of cargo passed through the gateway over the course of the first half of 2016.

The operator of Dubai International, the world’s busiest airport in terms of international passenger numbers, also operates the emirate’s other big air cargo gateway, Al-Maktoum at Dubai World Central (DWC).

DWC is home to, and is the hub through which fly, the freighter fleet of home carrier Emirates.

Early August saw an Emirates Boeing 777 passenger aircraft crash land at Dubai International Airport.

There were no fatalities on the flight but a firefighter tackling the blazing aircraft lost his life.

By August 7, the airport operator could issue a statement to the effect that the airport had resumed normal operations.
