European transport commissioner Violeta Bulc has promised a regulatory framework for commercial drones as part of a proposed new aviation strategy unveiled this week.
European Union flight safety agency EASA would be charged with drawing up new laws that would strike a balance between safety, privacy and data protection.
EASA would draw up design, production and certification standard but member states would decide on flying rules. Bulc envisaged that drones would also have to carry an electronic identification device to ensure that operators stuck to the rules.
