Australia’s Parliament has passed amendments to existing regulations in order to meet US air cargo security requirements for US-bound exports at piece-level by July 2017.
Changes to Australia’s Aviation Transport Security Act (2004) will create a 'known consignor' scheme for exporters, which will permit them to secure their products to US requirements at their warehouses and have it transferred straight to aircraft.
Businesses will be able to apply to join the known consignor scheme from July 2016.
A statement from the Australian government said: "The amendments will also strengthen the air cargo clearance framework and make it easier for businesses to determine when cargo is considered ‘cleared’ after examination.
“Industry will have an opportunity to comment on the regulatory arrangements for US-bound air cargo early in 2016.
“In the meantime, industry is encouraged to discuss their security arrangements for US-bound air cargo with their customers and logistics service providers.”
