It was a plane-spotters dream: taking a selfie with an Antonov-225 ‘Mriya’.

Hundreds of unglamorous freighter aircraft ply their daily trade with little or no attention. They are invisible to the general public who do not know or care that their must-have iPhones, the exotic fish in expensive restaurants and designer fashionwear, all came in by freighter.The An-225 is different.

Its recent multi-stop hop from Prague in the Czech Republic to Perth in Western Australia went viral. The 250 tonne capacity giant plane – originally built to ferry the Soviet era space shuttle – was photographed, tweeted, Facebooked and Instagram’d along the 14,000 km journey.
