A new supply chain set up for the transport of mangoes to consumers across the US has helped American Airlines Cargo handle record volumes of the fruit.
The carrier has already handled record volumes of mango shipments at the half-way point of a multi-month project during the summer.
So far, the carrier has moved more than 50,000 lbs. of mangoes with volumes expected to reach 125,000 lbs. by the end of August.
The carrier said that the mangoes began first transiting in late May and will continue to move through the end of August, with volumes peaking mid-July to mid-August.
The airline's cargo division is this year utilising its facility at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) as a hub to transport mangos across the US.
The mangoes originate in Pakistan and are transported by one of American’s interline partners to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) where they are trucked to a treatment plant for washing and then on to MSY.
Out of MSY, American utilises its domestic network to transport the mangoes across the US via hubs Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
"This is the first project of this scale to come out of American’s cargo operations in MSY," the carrier said.
