Nordic charter broker Aircontact and airline Volga Dnepr needed specially built loading equipment to load a 40-tonne propeller shaft as it was moved from Germany to Brazil for an oil client.

The shaft was first moved by road from a factory in Wismar to Rostock/Laage airport where it was transferred from truck into an IL76TD-90VD aircraft using specially designed loading equipment and two 30 ton mobile cranes.

Once loaded, the aircraft setoff on a 48 hour journey via Lisbon, Dakar and Recife to Florianopolis, Brazil.

“Not only had landing and overflying permits to be arranged on very short notice but we also had to arrange special road permits in Germany and truck the heavy/long piece before roads closed for weekend traffic,” said Aircontact.

After offloading, the shaft was driven to the port of Florianopolis and loaded onto a ship for the final part of its journey.
