Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), owner and manager of South Africa’s nine principal airports, has signed a have signed a cooperation agreement with Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding, representing Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport.
The strategic partnership will involve “the exchange of information and individual expertise”.
The agreement, inked during the Air Cargo Africa 2015 Conference and Exhibition, was signed by Tebogo Mekgoe, chief operating officer of ACSA, and Markus Kopp, chief executive of Mitteldeutsche.
It is the German company’s first such agreement on the African continent.
The signing follows the creation of a cargo management division at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, the largest air cargo hub on the African continent, with 400,000 tonnes per annum.
“This strategic partnership will provide industry-leading guidance in developing the company’s cargo business model and approach,” said Mekgoe.
Kopp said: “Given the centrality of air cargo to, especially, the automotive, electronics, telecommunications and perishable industries, an active exchange of experiences and analyses of potential will develop the capacity and reach of both airport management companies.”
ACSA has a global footprint spanning three continents, including management contracts at Mumbai’s Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport.
