Michigan’s Capital Region International Airport (LAN) will receive $8.2m in US federal funding to expand its existing cargo ramp.
LAN handles approximately 60.7m lbs (27,500 tonnes) of cargo annually, and airfreight operations continue to grow each year.
The project is anticipated to provide approximately 63% more cargo ramp space, which is needed especially during the first and fourth quarter.
Nicole Noll-Williams, president and chief executive of the Capital Region Airport Authority (CRAA), which owns and operates LAN, said: “This federal funding will allow us to expand our cargo operations at the airport and give us the ability to better accommodate current demand and future growth as well as diversify revenues.”
The cargo ramp expansion is expected to cost an estimated $11.9m, and the additional funds needed to complete the project will come from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and local match dollars.
The project is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2022. Expanded infrastructure is necessary to accommodate current operations and support continued growth.
“The greater Lansing region is only 90 minutes away from 90% of the state’s population,” said John Shaski, CRAA board chair.
“It’s a natural central hub with diverse transportation infrastructure and a competitively low cost of living, making it an attractive area for businesses to invest and grow. This is a huge win for LAN, Lansing, and the entire mid-Michigan region.”
