Liege Airport (LGG) has grown its air cargo business with the addition of a new freighter service operated by Beijing Capital Airlines.
The Chinese airline began the route between Nanchang Changbei International Airport (KHN) in East China’s Jiangxi province and Liege Airport in Belgium on June 24, said Alexis Lapot, senior cargo manager at Liege Airport in a LinkedIn post on June 25.
He said: "LGG is pleased to welcome Beijing Capital Airlines as an additional cargo carrier at Liege. The new freighter link from KHN strengthens Liege Airport's position as the largest European freighter hub."
Lapot confirmed to Air Cargo News' that the service will be operated with an A330-243P2F and a A330-343P2F.
did not specify the type of freighter in use for the service, however data from Planespotters shows Beijing Capital Airlines' cargo fleet currently comprises one Airbus A330-200F and one Airbus A330-300F, both delivered this year.
Swissport carried out the ground handling services for the operations, added Lapot.
Following a challenging 2023, Liege Airport's cargo volumes have bounced back this year due to increased demand for e-commerce and the modal shift from sea freight to airfreight.
Last month, the freighter hub benefitted from the launch of a new Challenge Group service from Liege to Dubai using a Boeing 747 freighter.
As part of the of the €500m master plan “Vision 2040”, the airport aims to double the capacity of first line cargo handling space in the next 10 years.
