Lufthansa Cargo is getting to work on developing its logistics centre (LCC) at its home hub of Frankfurt.
The airline's supervisory board has approved investments in a comprehensive infrastructure programme for the LCC.
Work has already begun and is expected to be completed in 2028, the airline said.
The plans include a new high-rack storage system, with work already underway, new buildings and the modernisation of existing building sections and warehouses.
Lufthansa Cargo said the renovation and renewal of the buildings will take place during ongoing operations and will not result in any restrictions for customers.
The airline said that its investments in digitalisation and new products, combined with increased e-commerce demand has changed demands on the logistics centre.
Lufthansa Cargo chief executive Peter Gerber said: "With this renewal of our logistics centre, we are investing in our airfreight base in Frankfurt and thus creating the structural requirements for even faster and more efficient airfreight. In doing so, we are also making the jobs of our employees at our most important logistics location in Germany safe for the future."
Chief operations officer Harold Gloy added: "The special thing about our infrastructure programme is that it is able to react flexibly to market developments and the changing needs of our customers.
"The holistically planned upgrading of the building infrastructure in combination with improvements to the logistics system and internal material flows will further increase the handling speed of shipments as well as the service quality for all Lufthansa Cargo customers."
Lufthansa Cargo has been planning to upgrade its Frankfurt infrastructure for a number of years, eventually opting to take a modular approach to developing its existing centre rather than developing a new building altogether.
Last year, the carrier announced that it would outsource general cargo handling at the LCC to logistics company Fiege.
